Internet dating sites become more targeted in order to more successfully pair members based on shared interests and backgrounds.

If you’re looking for love online and you’re a hog farmer, you might want to log off of Veggielove.com and log onto FarmersOnly.com.

These two online dating sites are among a growing number of sites that are catering to users based on interests and backgrounds. These targeted sites are taking the convenience of online dating to the next level by even further narrowing down the pool.

In addition, tailoring online dating sites are really the only way that entrepreneurs looking to grab a piece of the ever-growing Internet matchmaking pie from the giants like Match.com, eHarmony and SinglesNet.com.

To date, 1,378 U.S. online dating sites exist on the Internet, according to Hitwise, a research and analysis company. That’s up from 876 three years ago. It’s estimated that 44 percent of those sites are niche sites.

These niche sites include: Nerdsatheart.com, STDmatch.net, DateMyPet.com, HorseandCountrySingles.com and TheAtlasSphere.com, an online dating site for Ann Rand fans.

And the list is growing. In April, IntelligentPeople.com opened its virtual doors. Before hopeful daters can gain membership, they must first pass an I.Q. test. The site hopes to match up couples within the top 15 percent of America’s I.Q. levels.

Also in April, a site catering to cheaters, AshleyMadison.com put out its “Open for Business” sign. The site launched with a flurry of billboards with the slogan “Life is short, have an affair.”

While choosing a match according to similar love of animals, horses, authors and adultery are now an option, the niche sites that are the most popular are the sites that pair daters by race, sexual orientation or religion. Among the 20 most popular sites this year, according to Hitwise, are JDate, which is for Jewish daters, Christian Mingle, Manhunt, which is for gay men, Love From India, Amigos, Asian People Meet and Black Christian People Meet.

There are so many dating sites where you sit at a computer and pick men. I think we should get back out on the town and meet people in bars. It’s more fun than sitting at home waiting. I have been loving http://www.ThreeDayRule.com. I took the quiz, found my guy type, and now I go out all the time. It’s like I am back in my 20’s!
